The opportunity
Suunto acquired Sports Tracker with the vision of integrating a powerful digital experience into its broader business strategy. However, despite its loyal user base, the app was not profitable, leaving Suunto with a stark choice: find a way to make it financially viable or shut it down. The challenge was clear—create a product that customers loved while ensuring it could generate sustainable growth for the company.
Qvik's role
Qvik and Suunto have been ‘buddies’ in evolving sports-device technology since 2019. We developed existing design systems. Created the Suunto 9 Peak’s watch view. Evaluated and refined Suunto’s website purchase flow. Evaluated and enhanced the Training Peaks sleep design. All this meant we had the expertise and empathy needed to concept, validate and build the newly proposed Sports Tracker Premium.
The solution
Suunto wanted to create a Premium version of the free Sports Tracker app with a more commercially viable subscription-based model. To achieve this, Qvik’s designers delivered a comprehensive package including front-end development with business & concept design, benchmarking & user surveys, value proposition crafting, UX and visual design development.
The outcome
The new Suunto Sports Tracker Premium version was up and running in no time – with a 68% increase in users within months. 70% of whom continued after the free trial. The feature produced significant revenue in a short period of time. Subscribers, and revenue, continue to increase steadily. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. The million-plus DC Rainmakers blog hailed the smooth integration of TrainingPeaks feature.
